SPECIAL REPORT: McCarrick's Heir in D.C.

One of the challenges facing Pope Leo XIV is cleaning up corruption in the Church hierarchy.

In the spotlight is Cdl. Robert McElroy, whose meteoric rise from little-known San Francisco priest to now head of the most powerful archdiocese in America is worth examining.

He's plagued not only with a reputation for being one of the nation's most liberal bishops, but also criticized for protecting accused clergy: the notorious Cdl. Theodore McCarrick, as well as San Diego priest Fr. Jacob Bertrand.

In this latest Special Report, investigative journalist Christine Niles takes a look at McElroy's past, and what it means for the Church's future.

Part 1 of 13 from "Point 7 Now" conference. EmCee'd by McElroy, it's all about the "Millennium Development Goals" (Now the Sustainable Development Goals), and McElroy was a major proponent of them.

Interview McElroy held with John T. Noonan on "A Church that Can and Cannot Change," intimating that the Church could change Her mind on moral issues, not as a matter of changing doctrine, but developing Her nuanced perspective on it.

(Editor's note: We erroneously said Bp. Flores removed Bertrand from ministry. Flores had already passed by the time the allegations were made known to the San Diego diocese in 2014. Bertrand afterwards took a leave of absence.)

About Stella Maris Media

Illustration of Our Lady, Star of the Sea (Stella Maris)

Our vision

The name Stella Maris has its roots in a 5th-century translation by St. Jerome of the Hebrew name for Mary, Miryam. Originally written as Stilla Maris, it meant "Drop of the Sea." Through what likely stemmed from a transcription error, this evolved into Stella Maris, which means "Star of the Sea."

This title has been cherished in Catholic tradition, especially among seafarers before modern navigation, as they relied on the stars to guide them. Notably, the North Star, Polaris, was also known as Stella Maris.

Beyond just seafarers, Stella Maris serves as a beacon for all of life’s travelers, illuminating the darkness and offering hope as it cuts through the fog, guiding us toward the bright shores of eternity.

"Bringing hope to a world in need."
