Will Catholics Be Forced Underground?
This is eternal life: to know Thee, the only true God, and Him Whom Thou hast sent, Jesus Christ." -Last verse read by Cardinal John Fisher before his execution on June 22, 1535
The Church has endured major events of persecution throughout Her history. In such times, heroic bishops have stood strong to defend — and in some cases die — for the Faith.
During the English Reformation, every bishop but one went into schism — and that lone bishop, St. John Fisher, paid for it with his life.
What happened to the clergy and laity in those dioceses where the bishops gave way to weakness and fear, and defected? The faithful were left without a shepherd, without spiritual protection, vulnerable to the worldly forces that wished to crush them.
We know in such cases an underground network of priests was formed to minister to the faithful.
Are we approaching such times in the near future?
Good priests are being sidelined, here in America, as well as Europe and elsewhere, by bishops who seem more concerned with appeasing the world than following the Faith. It's already happening. What can we, as laity, do to support them?
